The district-level Road Safety Week observance started here with a slew of public awareness programmes under the aegis of various government, non-governmental, and voluntary organisations.
M.K. Raghavan, MP, inaugurated the programme organised by the Motor Vehicles Department at the Institute of Driving Training and Research (IDTR) at Chevayur on Sunday.
Mr. Raghavan said road safety awareness programmes would be effective only if it involved the youth. “It is high time our youngsters came forward to ensure compliance with road safety laws and undertook campaigns to improve the condition of roads,” he said.

Officials said the campaign would include painting and quiz events for schoolchildren. Video screenings, photo exhibitions, and street plays would be organised. The cooperation of private organisations in the automobile sector too would be sought to make the programme a success, they said.
