Exhibition in memory of artist Madhu Madappally under way in city

Canvas of ideas: A painting by the late artist Madhu Madappally exhibited at the Kerala Lalithakala Akademi Art Gallery in Kozhikode.

“Creative disturbance” is how one of the visitors to the Kerala Lalithakala Akademi Art Gallery in Kozhikode described the works of artist and theatre person Madhu Madappally.

50 paintings

The exhibition featuring around 50 paintings is being organised by the Kerala Lalithakala Akademi on the occasion of the first death anniversary of the artist.

Madappally’s works, which could be termed surrealistic, took his fame beyond the borders of the State and the country. The exhibition includes selected paintings from his series, ‘In Search of Earth’ and ‘In and Out’, besides several untitled ones.

Madappally, in his 25 years as artist and teacher, had conducted over a dozen solo exhibitions and was part of several group exhibitions.

He was revered for his stand in favour of the marginalised and his eagerness to expose what the majority would prefer to brush under the carpet.

The series ‘In and Out’ exposes the hollowness of relationships in the present world, while ‘In Search of Earth’ comprises images of those who have experienced utter happiness and freedom.

Purushan Kadalundi, MLA, opened the show on Sunday in the presence of artist Paul Kallanode. The exhibition will conclude on February 24.
