The Beypore Coast Guard station organised a special cleaning drive on the Beypore beach as part of the International Coastal Clean-up Day-2013 observance. Student volunteers from various parts of the city participated in the drive inaugurated by City Police Commissioner G. Sparjan Kumar.
A seminar on ‘Marine Environment’ was also organised on the occasion.
In his inaugural address, Mr. Sparjan Kumar said the coastal clean-up day observance was instrumental in sending a message to the masses about the importance of protecting the marine habitat and keeping the beaches clean. He also stressed the role of educational institutions and students in upholding the goal and contributing voluntarily to the cause.

Various educational institutions, the local police and government departments supported the drive. Besides 60 personnel from the Coast Guard, around 200 volunteers from various colleges and schools took part in the drive.
M. Venkatesan, Commander, Coast Guard, Beypore station, said the main aim of the event was to spread awareness of coastal cleaning initiatives and promote the removal of non-biodegradable waste from the coastline. The clean-up drive at Beypore was successful as it drew the support of the local administrators also, he added.
