Students interact with transgender activist

Students of the St. Joseph’s College at Pilathara here had an occasion to interact with activist and transgender Vijayaraja Mallika on a host of issues relating to the transgender community.

Speaking at the interaction organised by the Social Work Department of the college on Tuesday, Vijaya Raja Mallika said that the society in Kerala society could not accept transgender people because of the influence of the male-centred family and social systems.

The activist said that most of the transgender people of the State are migrating to other States in the country because of the social ostracism here.

Explaining the identity crisis and human rights violations being faced by the transgender community in the State, the activist said that an awareness on the issues being faced by the such minority groups among Social Works Department students in colleges was important for changing the complex retrogressive tendencies and social attitudes in the State.

She also highlighted the need for inculcating ideas and projects aimed at transforming the society.
