The school protection committee of the Government U.P. School at Civil station, Kozhikode, is having a tough time now. It is trying hard to convince the district panchayat that the building allotted to the local body in 2008 to set up a skill development centre temporarily should be given back to the school.
There were only 22 students when the District Collector temporarily allotted the building to the panchayat in 2008. Now, there are 88 students. The school is trying to create more facilities for them such as a library, a computer lab and more class rooms.
The councillor from Malaparamba ward, where the school is situated, had recently raised the issue in the Kozhikode Municipal Corporation Council, saying that the panchayat was reluctant to hand over the building. However, Education Standing Committee chairman M. Radhakrishnan said the panchayat had not raised any objections in the matter.

“The school has ten class rooms, which are sufficient as per the Kerala education rules. But it will be better if additional rooms are available for the proposed infrastructural additions,” he said. The Corporation Mayor had assured that measures would be taken to shift the skill development centre from the school building.
There will be a meeting of the stakeholders soon to discuss the issue.
