Kayaking for river conservation

August 05, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:47 am IST - Kozhikode:

Upholding the motto of river conservation, a group of professional kayakers from various parts of India will team up for a long-distance kayaking event titled Chaliyar River Challenge 2016 in the Chaliyar river from September 23.

The event, with about 100 participants, will be flagged off from Nilambur. It will conclude at Beypore on September 24. Organisers say the kayakers will collect floating waste from the river, in solidarity with the national-level river conservation programmes.

National kayaker Kaustubh Khade will also be part of the event hosted by Cheruvannur-based Jellyfish Water Sports in association with the District Tourism Promotion Council and the Clean Rivers Initiative Trust.

Brijesh Shaijal, one of the coordinators, says the Chaliyar River Challenge will provide an opportunity for students to familiarise themselves with various river conservation programmes. Street plays and music programmes will add colour to the two-day event, he adds.
