International meet on architecture at NIT-C

Thanima-2017, an international conference aimed at reinventing design pedagogy and contextual aesthetics, will begin at the National Institute of Technology, Calicut (NIT-C) on Friday. NIT-C Director Sivaji Chakravorti will open the two-day meet.

On aesthetics

The programme, being organised with the support of the Indian Institute of Architects (IIA) and the Existential Knowledge Foundation, will be centred on the theme ‘Re-imaging aesthetics unfolding — from conditioning to awakening’.

As many as 70 scientific papers will be presented at the conference which is expected to draw the participation of 200 architects apart from students.

M.A. Naseer, Head of the Department of Architecture at NIT-C, said Thanima-2017 would try to explore various aspects of architecture including its aesthetics, formation, conditioning, cultural connections and ways of teaching designs. It would also be an invitation for collaborative research in allied areas and to address the homogenisation trends in the industry.

Challenges

Brijesh Shajilal, Chairman of IIA Kozhikode chapter, said the homogenisation of human cultures was one of the biggest challenges of modernity, which had to be addressed by both academia and practitioners. Addressing the homogenisation of aesthetic sense would be considered as an important topic of discussion at the meet, he added.
