While the city’s residents have had a first-hand view of the progress of the Metro Rail, all they see is traffic, chaos and workers in hard hats.
For an inner glimpse into the making of Chennai’s dream transport project, Chennai Metro Rail Limited is planning to set up a museum at one of its stations.
The museum will have on display photographs of the different stages of construction of the stations, among other exhibits and will be of interest to both users as well as those from other parts of the State and country, CMRL officials said.

“We are yet to decide on the station which will house the museum but it will be one of the major stations that has a lot of space. We have already started documenting the progress of the metro by taking photographs of the stations at various stages,” said a CMRL official.
The museum may also have a miniature Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) — a device used in underground work to build passages connecting two stations.
“We may also put up photographs of the city after the metro is thrown open to use as well as some old pictures of the city. For instance, we may have pictures of ‘Then and Now: Anna Salai’ as this would be interesting for viewers,” the official added.

Delhi boasts south Asia’s first rail museum, located at Patel Chowk station.
The Delhi metro exhibits several photographs of the construction of the metro, said an official of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation.
“We also have TBM model, soil samples and we have curator services from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Tuesday to Sunday. On Monday, the museum is closed,” added the official.
Sources at Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation said that even Bangalore may get museum soon.
