Mayor Saidai S.Duraisamy on Monday announced that the Chennai Corporation will take measures to inaugurate the new abattoir in Perambur without affecting the livelihood of 3,000 families dependent on the facility. The announcement followed the request by Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar MLA V. Neelakandan to save the livelihood of the families.
Mr. Neelakandan alleged the private company had asked the corporation to pay Rs.72 crore as compensation for not permitting the inauguration of the facility.
The private company had completed construction of the abattoir in November 2011 at an estimated cost of Rs.48 crore. As per the agreement, the company would use the facility for export of meat products for most of the day and the workers would get to use it only for a short period. However, after the AIADMK won the Corporation Council elections, the inauguration was delayed because of opposition from residents .

As the State Human Rights Commission too has recently asked the Corporation authorities to ensure that the new abattoir in Perambur becomes functional before March, the civic body has initiated work on inaugurating the facility. The SHRC took suo motu action on newspaper reports about delay in commissioning of a new abattoir in Perambur by the Corporation of Chennai.
A few minor works are yet to be completed in the modern facility.
In 2009, the previous corporation council awarded a contract to modernise the old abattoir under which the firm that builds the abattoir has to pay the civic body on a yearly basis for two decades. The facility will be transferred to the Corporation after the contract period.
