A day after workers of Gammon India, engaged in Metro Rail work here, went on strike labour department officials on Saturday visited the labour colony in Nandambakkam where the workers reside.
This move came in the wake of a report published in The Hindu (‘ >150 Metro labourers strike work ’, dated May 18, 2013).
“The labourers resumed work on Saturday. We understand that their salary dues have been settled. Also, the issue of drinking water facility has been sorted out for now,” said a labour deparment official.

On Friday, it was reported that the Metro workers went on strike claiming that their salaries for April were not paid till May 17 though it had to be given by May 7.
Gammon India officials told The Hindu that the delay in paying the workers occurred since Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) was yet to clear their bills.
However, CMRL said that they had already given the clearances but the approval and the release of money had to come from the Gammon India office in Mumbai.

Gammon India with OJSC Mosmetrostroy was awarded a contract of Rs. 1,947 crore by CMRL.
It is involved in the construction of seven underground stations in the city. The stations are located between Government Estate and Saidapet on a stretch of 6.4 km.
