Suspected rapist and child killer Daswant confesses to his crimes

Suspected rapist and child killer Daswant on Sunday confessed to murdering his mother Sarala by using an iron hammer to get jewellery for his expenses.

Daswant was on bail after he was charged with rape and murder of a seven-year- old girl in Mugalivakkam last February. He has been living with his parents Sekar and Sarala.

When Sekar went out for work, his wife Sarala was found murdered and gold jewellery including her

thaali and pair of bangles missing. Daswant was missing from home and his bike was not there. His mobile phone was switched off.

He was caught at Mahalaxmi Race Court in Mumbai by a special team on Wednesday, but escaped the next day from police custody. On Friday, the police team nabbed him at a betting bar in Kala Ghoda and he was brought to Chennai on Saturday amidst tight security.

From 10 p.m. onwards, the investigators under direct supervision of Deputy Commissioner of Police S. Sarvesh Raj grilled him with several questions. During the enquiry, he admitted to have killing his mother by hitting her with an iron hammer.

He told the police that he demanded money from her and picked up a quarrel after she refused. He pushed her down and she criticised him for the murder of a child. In a fit of anger, he drew the hammer and hit her on her head and other parts. He removed the jewellery and fled. He fled the city with the help of jail mates David and Rajesh, Daswant told the police.

The police brought him to the scene of crime at midnight and he disclosed what he did on the day of occurrence. The interrogation with him concluded on Sunday morning.

Daswant is likely to be produced before a Magistrate in Chengalpet and remanded to judicial custody. He will be lodged in Central Prison, Puzhal by evening.

He will be produced before the sessions court on Monday for commencing trial in the rape and murder of the child in February.
