CM to open Amma canteen at GH

The Chennai Corporation will commence operations of an Amma canteen on the premises of Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital on Wednesday.

Chief Minister Jayalalithaa will inaugurate the facility at a function at the Secretariat.

The civic body plans to sell 10,000 idlis, 2,000 plates of sambar rice, 1,500 of curd rice, 1,000 of

pongal to persons visiting the hospital every day. The hospital receives more than 10,000 visitors per day.

The prices at the new Amma canteen will be similar to those at the other facilities across the city. The restaurant is expected to supplement the hospital’s canteen.

The beneficiaries are likely to be visitors from less-privileged economic backgrounds. A chunk of the two lakh visitors to Chennai Central station are also likely to use the canteen.

The Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, which receives the largest number of patients from other districts among government hospitals, has 2,722 beds.

Six other government hospitals in the city will get Amma canteens shortly.
