As fire in the front portion of the building was almost brought under control on Wednesday, it reignited from another floor and started spreading. Later the ground floor of the building caved in and made it impossible for fire brigade to move in.

The authorities and the management of Chennai Silks and Sri Kumaran Thangamaligai are exploring options to retrieve gold jewellery weighing approximately 400 kg from the safety locker that is stuck in the debris, according to sources.

According to police sources, approximately ₹ 20 crore worth diamonds were inside the jewellery shop that is located on the ground floor.

A few jewellers said the safety locker could withstand any natural calamity or major fire. Hence, there is the possibility that the gold and diamond jewellery can be retrieved.
