Deepavali celebrations saw a rise in the amount of garbage generated in the city.
The Chennai Corporation on Wednesday collected 5360 tonnes of municipal solid waste – 830 tonnes higher than the quantity of waste collected on a normal day. Anna Nagar zone, with 720 tonnes on Wednesday, generated the largest amount of garbage while Manali saw the least with just 60 tonnes.
Other zones such as Tiruvottiyur-210 tonnes, Madhavaram-110 tonnes, Tondiarpet-600 tonnes, Royapuram-540 tonnes, Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar-400 tonnes, Ambattur-320 tonnes, Teynampet-650 tonnes, Kodambakkam-560 tonnes, Valasaravakkam-150 tonnes, Alandur-200 tonnes, Adyar-530 tonnes, Perungudi-170 tonnes and Sholinganallur-140 tonnes also collected additional garbage after Deepavali. Residents reported the additional garbage strewn on their roads.

“The garbage enclosure in our locality is clean. But a large amount of garbage is being dumped on the road near the enclosure. We hope the roads to be swept clean on Thursday,” said Kanuri Viswamitra, a resident of Sakarapani Street, West Mambalam.
The amount of garbage collected on Tuesday, the day of Deepavali, was relatively low because of the low turnout of conservancy workers who were celebrating Deepavali.
On Tuesday, Teynampet zone (630 tonnes) generated the largest quantity of waste. The garbage was dumped in Perungudi and Kodungaiyur dump yards.
