The fifth edition of Bharat Sangeet Utsav that begins on Friday aims at bringing an exciting mix of Carnatic, Hindustani and some film music.
The 10-day festival, being organised by Carnatica, will feature young and senior artists and a delightful mix of instrumental and vocal music, providing students an opportunity to get close to performers.
According to Carnatica’s managing trustee K.N. Sashikiran, the event is aimed at promoting “culture and bringing in peace and harmony.”

Thematic programmes
There will be three concerts everyday. Some artists will present thematic programmes. According to some of the participating artists, the idea of performing to a theme poses an exhilarating challenge.
For instance, Sudha Raghunathan will divide her guru M.L.Vasanthakumari’s work into three parts during the performance; vocalist Nithyashree Mahadevan and her niece will perform in the D.K.Pattammal tradition and for the first time, T.M. Krishna and his wife, Sangeetha Sivakumar, will perform together.

Papanasam Sivan’s grandson, Ashok Ramani, will present the musician’s work. In the final interactive session, Aruna Sairam will perform for three hours, rendering songs of listener’s choice.
Hindustani classical rendition by Amjad Ali Khan on the sarod, a lecture on rakti ragas in the Hindustani and Carnatic music by Sriram Parasuram and a performance by the Madras String Quartet are some other programmes. The concerts are free and seats will be available on first-come basis. Carnatica also offers donor passes.
Rasikas will have an opportunity to participate in contests.
A kiosk will present the listeners a chance to download music of their choice onto pen drives and mobile phones. This offer is being provided for the first time, Mr. Sashikiran said.
