Civic body asks companies for proposals on waste management

The Chennai Corporation will request proposals from 18 of its shortlisted companies for projects under its solid waste management initiative this week.

The initiative includes privatisation of conservancy operations along with remediation and scientific closure of the existing Perungudi and Kodungaiyur dumpyards.

The Corporation Council has now approved the proposal for gradual privatisation of conservancy operations in all zones.

The civic body is likely to select one or more companies for the solid waste management initiative within 45 days. Officials from the Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services Ltd with the help of a private agency will assist the Corporation select the right technology.

Recently, the civic body intensified its search for a sustainable world-class technology for waste management. It first sought expressions of interest from multinational companies in the wake of the National Green Tribunal setting aside the environmental clearance granted by the Tamil Nadu government to the integrated solid waste management facility in Perungudi. As many as 31 companies participated in the expression of interest stage.

Meanwhile, the Corporation has also identified alternative regional landfills to facilitate work on remediation of the two dumpyards.

The company finally selected to carry out the solid waste management initiative, will design a scalable and modular plant with a capacity to process 10,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste per day. The company will also carry out street cleaning and door-to-door collection of garbage.
