At the entrance to Pillana Garden near the Ambedkar statue on Tannery Road, make it a point to join the crowd waiting for a taste of the bajjis on offer at Prakash Tiffin Centre.

Come evening, Prakash and his wife deep fry, batch after batch of bajjis made with green banana and potato, masala vadas and uddin vadas, all best eaten with the tangy takkali (tomato) chutney that flows freely here.

At Rs.10 for a plate of four, they are the perfect solution to those early evening munchies. If you’re looking for something more filling, the ‘tiffin items’ — spicy pongal, lemon rice, puri and amazingly soft idlis — are likely to catch your eye.
