A 55-year-old pedestrian had a miraculous escape when he fell into a 15-ft-deep hole after a part of the footpath caved in adjacent to the Namma Metro site near Central College on Thursday afternoon.

Nandakumar, who was walking on the footpath around 1.30 p.m., was rescued by autorickshaw driver, Kabir. Eyewitnesses said Mr. Nandakumar was using his mobile phone when the incident took place. He was lucky to get away with minor injuries. The pit he fell into had a diameter of 3 ft and a depth of 15 ft.

The stretch is part of the East-West underground track that passes near the Vidhana Soudha before crossing K.R. Circle and moving on to the Majestic interchange. “He was immediately pulled out. We were notified about the incident and have sent officials to investigate. This should not have happened, but it might have because of the rain,” said U.A. Vasanth Rao, spokesperson, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (BMRCL).
