City water supply may tide over summer

Cyclone Phailin has wrought havoc in the neighbouring districts but has not had any impact here. It has not even added significantly to the rainfall in the district. The rainfall during the cyclonic storm was a meagre 9 mm.

According to Deputy Executive Engineer (Irrigation) B. Rajendra Kumar, there was rain earlier but during the storm when rain was forecast, it did not materialise.

In Raiwada and Konam which catered both to agricultural and drinking needs, however, the water was adequate to meet the requirement, he said.

Municipal Commissioner M.V. Satyanarayana said reservoirs were full up to 85 to 90 per cent.

“Though the city or the district did not get any rain during cyclone, rain earlier in the catchment areas led to the reservoirs receiving good inflows,” he said here on Tuesday.

This was expected to the stand the city in good stead for the next summer.

Particularly encouraging was the level in Yeleru reservoir from which water comes through the Yeleru main canal. The 153 km- canal has a carrying capacity of 135 mgd. Against a maximum level of 86.4 m the present level is 81.51 m and the supply was estimated to last till August 2014.

The Thatipudi reservoir stands at an encouraging 290.1 ft against the maximum of 297 ft with supply expected to continue till August 2014. Raiwada reservoir presently stands at 110.4 m against the maximum of 114 m and the supply was estimated to last till May 31.

The Meghadrigedda reservoir that is used as a balancing reservoir stands at 53.3 ft against the maximum of 61 ft.

Municipal authorities hope that there will be another spell of rain in November that will improve the situation.
