Police in the dock over gangrape case

The murder of a 41-year-old woman, wife a bank manager , appears to be gaining heat, and fingers are being pointed towards police for supposedly shoddy handling of the case.

On Friday, it was Governor Mr. E.S.L. Narasimham who asked for the appointment of a Special Public Prosecutor to inquire into the case and directed police to arrest the culprits immediately and send them to the fast track court.

On Saturday, it was the turn of employees of the bank to approach the CPI (M) to intervene and put pressure on police to solve the case at the earliest. The employees of the bank along with other employees of various banks will be taking out a rally from Nirmala Convent to the Commissioner of Police office on Sunday at 10 a.m. The branch manager Mr. G. Krishnamurthi told

The Hindu that the entire banking community was unhappy with the way the investigation was conducted. “The criminals laid the trap of elopement and the police fell for it. They did not probe any other angle and did not even check the apartment complex, while the body was kept in the neighbouring apartment for one full day. She was brutally assaulted and murdered and we demand justice,” he said.

It is believed that a car driver by name Mr. Subhani and five others were involved in the crime and the police have already taken them into custody and are questioning.

CPI (M) district secretary Mr. R. Raghu told The Hindu that the Mahila Sangam wing of the party would take up the issue.

Mylavaram MLA and TDP district president Mr. Devineni Umamaheswara Rao had met the Commissioner of Police on Friday on this issue.

However, Deputy Commissioner of Police (law and order) Mr. M. Ravi Prakash maintained that they were close to cracking the case and any information at this juncture would dilute the investigation process. He also said police would come out with the facts in a day or two and justice would be delivered.
