The Karnataka Janapara Vedike has urged the State government to recommend a CBI probe into cases of rape, murder and unnatural deaths, which had taken place under the Ujire police station limits in Dakshina Kannada district from 1986 to 2012.
In a press release issued here on Monday, Convener of the Vedike Srirama Divana said that the police have arrested an innocent in connection with the rape and murder of a student of SDM Pre-University College in Ujire on October 9, 2012.
The parents of Soujanya and a social activist, Mahesh Shetty Timarody, had made it clear that instead of arresting the real perpetrators of the crime, the police had arrested a person called Santosh Rao, who was not connected with it. The police had not arrested the real perpetrators of the crime as they wielded a lot of political, financial and social influence. He sought adequate protection for Mr. Rao.

On February 17, 1986, a girl was kidnapped, raped and murdered near Dharmasthala in Dakshina Kannada district. The perpetrators of this crime, too, had not been arrested.
In the last 26 years between 1986 and 2012, many cases of rape, mysterious suicides, murders and unnatural deaths had taken place in Dharmasthala and Ujire villages.
It was not possible for either the police or the CID to crack these cases as they were subject to pressure and influence from various quarters. The police and CID were trying to hush up both the cases. The real perpetrators of these crimes were roaming free.

A delegation led by Mr. Divana submitted, a memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on this issue, to the Urban Development Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake here on October 13, the release said.
