Moral policing: search on for three assaulters

Puttur Town Police have already arrested four persons for assaulting a quarry worker for allegedly talking to a woman from another community.

While four persons have been arrested, the Puttur police are on the lookout for at least three more in connection with the assault on a quarry worker in what appears to be a case of moral policing.

On Sunday night, the group of men assaulted quarry worker Jayarama Poojary at Salethur for allegedly talking to a woman from another community, the police said. Faizal, Habib, Salman and Adam were arrested by Puttur Town Police on Monday, and were sent to 15 days judicial custody by the court. The attackers have been identified as Umar, Faizal, Riyaz Wajid and Habeeb.

Man killed in accident

Rupin Pereira was killed, while two pillion riders were severely injured, when a mini-bus rammed into the motorcycle they were travelling on near Ujire in Belthangady taluk on Tuesday. The accident took place at around 2.30 pm when Mr. Pereira was travelling with Mohammad Safran and Richard Hadley from Belthangady to Ujire. Mr. Pereira died on the spot. While the pillion riders were admitted to a private hospital with injuries. A case has been booked against the mini-bus driver, the police said.

Train kills electrician
A 40-year-old electrician was run over by a train near Puttur Railway Station on Monday night. The Railway Police said N. Ramanand was run over by the Puttur Passenger train while he was crossing the railway track.

Liquor seized The personnel from Excise Department arrested two persons on the charge of illegally ferrying alcoholic beverages in a private bus at Shiroor village in Kundapur taluk of Udupi district on Tuesday. On a tip-off, the personnel of the department stopped a bus from Goa to Mangalore near Shiroor Check Post around 4 a.m. They found 21 litres of alcoholic beverages worth Rs. 25,000. The driver and cleaner were arrested and produced before a court in Kundapur, which remanded them in judicial custody till January 6.
