‘Brindamma, you were exceptional’

"The singer and the song, the musician and the music cannot be separated," said Gopalkrishna Gandhi of T. Brinda, on the occasion of the launch and screening of the DVD ‘Brindamma- Music Beyond Music’ on Monday.

‘Genius’. That’s how most of her admirers describe legendary vocalist and veena player T. Brinda, fondly known as Brindamma.

“The singer and the song, the musician and the music cannot be separated. Brindamma, you were exceptional in what you did and exceptional in what you refrained from doing,” said Gopalkrishna Gandhi, Chairman of Kalakshetra, and former Governor of West Bengal, on the occasion of the launch and screening of the DVD ‘Brindamma- Music Beyond Music’ on Monday.

Chitravina Ravikiran, a disciple of the legend, said he felt grateful that she had generously taught him some of the most treasured masterpieces. Describing her music as ‘utterly exquisite’, he said it was well beyond the intellect.

“The true quality of a disciple does not stop with learning , but is also in performing with a good trace of the guru. Every note I play is a tribute to Brindamma,” he said. A nascent lover of carnatic music, the creative director of the film, S.B. Khanthan, spoke of his instant penchant for her songs . Following the launch of the DVD, , the film was screened for the audience.

Other speakers included composer Spencer Venugopal and organsier of the Cleveland Thyagaraja Aradhana V.V. Sundaram. The DVD is marketed by Swathi's Sanskriti Series.
