Flautist Jayaprada Ramamurthy’s seasoned performance

The welcome move initiated by the A.P. Bhasha Samskritika Sangham to conduct a cultural programme every week in all the Government colleges of music and dance in the state is proving to be a grand success and is much appreciated by music and dance rasikas.

This week’s programme arranged by the G.V.R. Government College of Music and Dance, Vijayawada at Gokaraju Laila Gangaraju Kala Vedika was a melodious flute concert by veteran vidushi Jayaprada Ramamurthy of Hyderabad. She is one of the seniormost disciples of late N. Ramani and Pandit Hariprasad Chowrasia.

Maha Ganapathim of Dikshitar in Nata preceding it with fine raga. After playing

Govardhanagiri she took up Khamas as a major item playing the raga superbly with bhava-laden phrases. Tuneful melody flowing from her instrument was soothing. Jayaprada played Mysore Vasudevachar’s popular kirtana

Brochevarevarura in a sumptuous manner concluding it with excellent kalpanaswaras. The ragamalika pallavi was also a highlight. The tani played at the end of the Khamas kirtana by K. Sadgurucharan (mridangam), B. Hanumanta Rao (ghatam) and Bhargavaram (kanjira) was thrilling.

Veteran violin vidwan Kokkonda Subramanya Sarma made his presence felt with his fine solo version of Khamas. His following showed his vast experience. Other attractive items played by Jayaprada Ramamurthy were the Devaranama and a fine tillana. Before the concert there was brief function in which S. Kumaraswamy a fine composer with ample musical knowledge and Prayaga Vedakumari, retired Station Director of Akashvani spoke lauding the cultural department’s scheme.
