Integrated road work begins

The Chennai Corporation has initiated various infrastructure development projects in the newly added zones of Manali, Ambattur and Valasaravakkam. The road work involves construction of storm water drains, installation of street lights, laying of footpath, and relaying of link roads in the three zones. Dairy Development Minister and Madhavaram MLA V. Murthy and Mayor Saidai S. Duraisamy took part in Bhumi Puja and inaugurated the work at Anna Nagar West Extension on May 19. Mr. Murthy said that Rs. 3.27 crores has been allocated for improving the link roads at CMDA Colony; work comprising relaying of roads, storm water drain, street lights and footpath has been estimated at a cost of Rs.5.15 crore at TVS Colony; and Rs.10.5 crore for road work at Mogappair Main Road and Madha Koil Street of Valasavarakkam Zone.

Manali Zone Chairman Thangasivam said that development projects were in full swing and were expected to be completed within six months, before the onset of the Monsoon. He said that the road work extends to Mathur CMDA Colony, Kosapur Road, Manali Pudhu Nagar, Andaarkuppam, and Idayanchavadi Salai. The integrated road work is being executed at a cost of Rs. 23 crore.

Ambattur zone chairman Joseph Samuel said that that Rs.86.43 crores have been allocated for 15 wards of the zone and it would be be spent over a period of one year.

For the second phase of road work, estimates are being made to lay small roads and streets at a cost of Rs. 25 crore. Tenders are likely to be called for these works in the next two months.

V. Rajagopal, a social activist from Anna Nagar Western Extension, wants the road work to be carried out without increasing the road height, for which the existing surface has to be scrapped to provide a new layer of black topping. According to the Chennai Corporation sources, they awaited Chennai Metrowater to complete its pipe laying works in TVS Colony, TVS Avenue, and Officers Colony Main Road. As the clearance is given, work will begun with in a few days. Of these roads, work on Officers Colony Main Road will be taken up under Bus Route Roads Scheme.

The civic body has proposed to improve the basic infrastructure facilities including storm water drains, street lights and paved roads under an integrated scheme in the newly added zones for which the State Government has allocated Rs. 22.93 crores for Manali Zone, Rs. 86.43 crores for Ambattur Zone and Rs. 48.50 crores for Valasaravakkam Zone.
