Uttharavindri Ulle Vaa is romantic comedy produced by C.V. Sridhar, under his banner Chitralaya Pictures. It was directed by one of his associates N.C. Chakravarthy and it was written by Chitralaya Gopu. It had an impressive cast which included Ravichandran, Kanchana, Nagesh and Rama Prabha.

The movie deals with four friends. Ravichandran, the hero, is the son of a rich man (Veera Raghavan), and he along with his three friends Nagesh, Mali and Murthy, lives in a mansion owned by his father. While they plan to go on a holiday, a young woman (Kanchana) sneaks into the bungalow, fleeing from danger, and begs the hero to offer her solace for two days. He agrees and the trip is cancelled. Kanchanca and Ravichandran fall in love.

Another woman (Vijaya Chandrika) suddenly appears one night and leaves her child, Baby Shanthi, with a note claiming that she is Mali’s daughter. Mali asserts that he has never seen the baby before and asserts that he doesn’t know the woman in the letter. But he falls for the child and brings her up with love and affection.

The other friend Murthy falls in love with a nurse (Sachu) who is the daughter of an eccentric doctor (Thengai Srinivasan). Finally, all the problems are solved and the friends live happily ever after.

The film was photographed by B.S. Loganathan and edited by N. M. Shankar. Choreography is by another veteran Pasumarthi Krishnamurthi.

One of the plus points of the film is the music composed by M.S. Viswanathan. The film has five songs, and some of them, like the title song ‘Uttharavindri Ulle Vaa’, and ‘Madhamo Aavani Mangaiyo Mangani’ became hits. The off-screen singers include P. Susheela, S.P. Balasubrahmanyam, L.R. Easwari, T.M. Soundararajan and, somewhat surprisingly, noted actor Sreekanth, who sings a duet!

The film was a success at the box office though it did not complete the coveted 100-day run.

The lead pair Ravichandran and Kanchana, besides Nagesh, Mali and Sachu. Rama Prabha also got noticed for playing the role of a young woman suffering from a memory lapse who would only speak in a centuries-old Tamil accent!

Remembered For: The melodious music of M.S. Viswanathan, the humorous dialogue by Chitralaya Gopu who wrote the screenplay and script, photography by B.S. Loganathan, and choreography by Pasumarthi Krishnamurthi.
