Gogoi to submit resignation within a week

May 17, 2014 04:05 pm | Updated November 17, 2021 01:59 am IST - Guwahati:

Owning responsibility for the party's poor showing in the Lok Sabha polls in the State, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Saturday said that he would tender his resignation within a week.

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Saturday said that he would tender his resignation to party president Sonia Gandhi within a week’s time. "We have accepted the people's mandate in favour of the BJP with all humility. I take full responsibility for the poll debacle in Assam and will tender my resignation. We could not anticipate that we would face such a humiliating defeat," said Mr. Gogoi at a press conference.

Mr. Gogoi said his party would make constituency-wise detailed analysis to find out where it went wrong in Assam. Perhaps, long stay in power for three consecutive terms had made the party in Assam complacent and arrogant, he said.

The Chief Minister, however, said he did not favour any change in the party's national leadership and said both Ms. Gandhi and party vice-president Rahul Gandhi had put their best efforts to strengthen the Congress and stood by it in the most difficult period.

Mr. Gogoi congratulated Prime Minister-elect Narendra Modi and conveyed his best wishes. He hoped that Assam would get more packages and assistance from the Modi government to deal more effectively with the State's problems like flood, erosion and unemployment. He recalled that Mr. Modi himself had promised to solve these problems during his poll campaign in the State.
