BJP wins 7 seats in Assam

Riding a strong Modi wave, the Bharatiya Janata Party has won seven of the 14 parliamentary seats in Assam.

The Congress managed to win only three seats against the seven it held in 2009. This is the lowest tally for the party in the State.

The Maulana Badruddin Ajmal-led All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) also dented the Congress bastion and won three seats while an independent won one.

The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) failed to win a single seat unlike in 2009.

The BJP retained three seats — Gauhati, Nowgong and Mangaldoi — and made inroads into the traditional Congress stronghold among tea garden workers and Adivasi communities in upper and northern Assam to wrest four seats — Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur, Jorhat and Tezpur. The AIUDF retained Dhubri and wrested Barpeta and Karimganj from the Congress, further eroding the Congress support base among Muslim voters.
