‘Time given to manufacture majority’

Congress president Rahul Gandhi speaks during Jan Swaraj Sammelan in Raipur on May 17, 2018.

In his first reaction to Governor Vajubhai Vala swearing in B.S. Yeddyuruppa as the next Chief Minister of Karnataka, Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday called it a “mockery of the Constitution and defeat of democracy.” “The BJP’s irrational insistence that it will form a Govt. in Karnataka, even though it clearly doesn’t have the numbers, is to make a mockery of our Constitution. This morning, while the BJP celebrates its hollow victory, India will mourn the defeat of democracy,” Mr. Gandhi tweeted on Thursday morning.

Senior Congress leaders also questioned the 15 days given to Mr. Yeddyurappa for the floor test and alleged that it was designed to “manufacture a majority.” “Mr. Yeddyurappa’s letter to the Governor will seal his fate. There is no mention of a number bigger than 104. The Governor’s invitation does not mention any number at all!” tweeted Mr. Chidambaram.
