The Princess of Prosperity

As we approach the turn of the year, it may be a good idea to salute Lakshmi, the Goddess of prosperity and wealth, as a sure investment for guaranteed returns!

*Lakshmi is the Hindu Goddess of prosperity and wealth and is referred to by many names including Shri, Tirumagal, Bhargavi and so forth.

*She is the consort of Lord Vishnu and is believed to reside in the ‘vakshasthalam’, a very special spot in the Lord’s heart.

*Several beautiful temples in India are dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, key ones being the Ashtalakshmi temple in Chennai, the Mahalakshmi temple in Mumbai and the Shaktipeetha temple of Mahalakshmi or Ambabai in Kolhapur.

*There are innumerable Sanskrit texts in praise of the Goddess, including the ‘Shri Mahalakshmi Ashtakam’, the ‘Kanakadhara Stotram’ by Adi Shankara and the ‘Shri Suktam’, which is a part of the Vedas.

*Goddess Lakshmi has been extolled in Carnatic music compositions by >Muttuswami Dikshitar, Saint Tyagaraja, Papanasam Sivan and many others.

*She is worshipped through several annual festivals in India including the >Varalakshmi Vratam and the Lakshmi Puja during Diwali. Three out of the nine nights of Navaratri are also dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi.
