More Paris riots

Rioting students set fire to cars and stoned the police last night [May 23, Paris] as fresh violence broke out in the Latin Quarter of Paris. The police used teargas and water cannons to hurl back students as they made swift guerrilla-type attacks and withdrew to re-form elsewhere. Two persons were reported injured. But by dawn the police were in complete control and strong units ringed in the Latin Quarter. President de Gaulle confirmed to the Cabinet to-day that he will call a referendum in June (possibly on June 16) and warned that the crisis gripping the nation threatens the very foundations of French society. Authoritative sources said General de Gaulle told his Ministers during a four-hour cabinet meeting that many Clings that could have been done by the Government had not been done. The President, who is to make a broadcast to-morrow, said that the referendum would be for Frenchmen to approve or disapprove a vast plan of action to end the present critical situation. He called on each Minister and Secretary of State individually to give his opinion on the causes and remedies for toe crisis. The students, who demonstrated and scuffled with police last night, announced that they will stage a “mass demonstration of strength” to-morrow to protest against the ban on the re-entry into France of Daniel Cohn-Bendit. Fighting broke out shortly after midnight as students attacked the French Senate with stones after a demonstration protesting against the Government’s decision to ban the extremist student leader, Mr. Daniel Cohn-Bendit, now in Holland, from returning to the country. Informed sources said that Mr. Cohn Bendit known as “Danny the Red” since he took leadership of the March 22 Movement at the University of Nanterre was considered as “undesirable in France.”
