Vizag to host national carrom championship

Carrom players from 31 states and 17 institutions will take part in the 43rd Senior National and Inter-state Championship to be held here from March 11 to 16.

Addressing a media conference on Monday, general secretary of Andhra State Carrom Association and organising secretary, Neeraj Sampathy said in all 700 players and officials are expected to take part in the week-long event to be hosted by the Carrom Association of Visakhapatnam district.

Institutions like RBI, Indian Airlines, LIC, Major Ports, Petroleum Sports Board, Central Civil Services, Defence Accounts, Indian Audit, All India Electricity Board, BSNL will take part in the tournament.

“There will be a separate team championship for states and organisations for men and women apart from individual championships in categories of men and women and veteran men and veteran women (above 45 yeas age)”, Dr. Sampathy said.

He said the Visakhapatnam district association had hosted the national championship in 2009.

The International Carrom Federation (ICF) was formed in year 1988 and as many as 26 countries from Asia, Europe, American and Australia continents are affiliated.

So far, six world championships, three world cups and five ICF cup championships were held in addition to many international invitation and open championships.

Indian players had been dominating this game and are the reigning world champions in both the men and women category, he added.
