Junior Nationals from Monday

The adidas-MCC national junior (under-18) tennis championship commences on August 18 at the Madras Cricket Club (MCC) here. The week-long singles and doubles tournament for boys and girls will feature 176 main draw players and will conclude on August 23.

Prominent players include B.R. Nikshep and S.D. Prajwal Dev, both from Karnataka, and Alex Solanki from Delhi in the boys’ draw and Simran Kaur Sethi and Vanshika Sawhney, both from Delhi, and Devanshi Bhimjiyani from Maharashtra in the girls’ section.

Local talent will be represented by the likes of Arjun Ramakrishnan, I.B. Akshay, Vasudev Vijayaraman, R. Abhinikka, Ramya Natarajan and Diana Abi. Qualifying matches will be held on Saturday and Sunday with the main draw matches from Monday. The clay courts at MCC, Cosmopolitan Club and Quaid-e-Milleth College will be used for the initial rounds and matches from the pre-quarterfinals are expected to be played at MCC. In case rain renders the clay courts unplayable, the hard courts at SDAT Nungambakkam stadium will be used.

A tournament win here will guarantee each player 200 AITA ranking points, with 150 for the runner-up and 100 for the semifinalists.
