TN men advance

Defending champions Tamil Nadu men and Railways women expectedly topped their respective groups to enter the quarterfinals with an all-win record in the 60th senior National volleyball championship at the Balbir Juneja Indoor Stadium here on Saturday.

In the final league match of the women's group A, Railways went past West Bengal 3-0 to end this phase with nine points. WB ended second with six points.

The TN men beat Uttarakhand 25-21, 25-18, 30-28 and ended with nine points. Haryana was second with five points followed by Uttarakhand (3) and Karnataka (1).

Himachal Pradesh women edged past Tamil Nadu 3-1 to occupy the third spot with three points and TN ended fourth losing all matches. The top three teams from the group made it to the quarterfinals beginning on Monday.

Punjab women topped group C, Chhattisgarh emerged the winner of group D, Jharkhand ended on top of the heap in group E and Gujarat was the group F champion.

Punjab and Chhattisgarh will play in one play-off while Jharkhand and Gujarat will clash in the other. The two winners will square off with the fourth placed teams of group A and B as decided by lot and the winner of the second play-off match will move to quarterfinals.

In the men's section, Uttar Pradesh (group C), West Bengal (group D), Odisha (group E) and Chhattisgarh (group F) made it to the play-off round.

The results: Men: Group A: Uttarakhand bt Karnataka 19-25, 28-26, 25-20, 25-15; Haryana bt Karnataka 25-18, 25-23, 20-25, 22-25, 15-9; TN bt Uttarakhand 25-21, 25-18, 30-28.

Women: Group A: HP bt TN 21-25, 32-20, 25-18, 25-19; Railways bt West Bengal 25-17, 25-12, 25-17.
