'Indian boxers are bold'

V. Devarajan is upbeat about the mental approach by Indian amateurs shortlisted for stepping into the ring at World Series Boxing 2011-2012.

“Life here is about hard training and instant fame if you make it. Our boxers are amateurs but are mentally ready for the grind,” said the former World Cup medallist-turned pro, currently attached to Mumbai Fighters as an assistant coach. “Indian boxers in the camp are bold. In my interactions with those chosen for Friday's home bouts against the Italians, they are looking forward to fighting.”

Four Indians and Irishman Patrick Gallagher from MF face Milano Thunder on Friday. A new group of five from MF, foreigners and Indians, have been sounded out by Technical Director Joe Clough and coach Shiv Kumar Pal for an away tie against Dynamo Moscow later.

Devarajan said : “WSB rules do not allow one boxer to compete in consecutive competitions, so one top professional cannot dominate in a team, which looking from the Indian angle means more exposure for our amateurs able to adapt to a new way of fighting.”

Devarajan experienced life as a pro in London, fighting as a super featherweight.

“Pro boxing is about learning to throw explosive punches and build endurance to last five rounds. Fame and money is available for those amateurs able to handle that. You needs guts to train hard and courage to survive in alien conditions during away bouts. The striking aspect about boxers in Mumbai Fighters is that they want to make an impact in pro ranks.”
