Ashish, Santhosh, Jisna and Chandan qualify for youth Worlds

Haryana hammer thrower Ashish Jakhar, Tamil Nadu decathlete Rajesh and Maharashtra’s 1500m runner Durga Pramod Deore (Mah) 4:34.05s bettered national records in the 12th National youth athletics championship at Bambolim, Goa, on Friday, a day when four athletes qualified for the forthcoming youth Worlds in Colombia.

Ashish, whose 72.04m carried him to the world’s top ten in this year’s youth list, was the lone national record breaker today to qualify for the youth Worlds.

The other qualifiers for the youth Worlds were the boys and girls 400m runners – West Bengal’s Chandan Bauri, Kerala’s Jisna Mathew – and Tamil Nadu’s sprint hurdler Santhosh Kumar.

While Ashish improved his personal best stunningly by nearly five metres (previous best 67.09, November 2014), the under-16 junior National champion Jisna, who is coached by P.T. Usha at her academy in Kozhikode, was a comfortable winner as Kerala swept all the three medals in the girls 400m.
