Adhiban and Harikrishna advance

P. Harikrishna and B. Adhiban won nerve-wracking tie-breakers, to join Viswanathan Anand, Vidit Gujrathi and S.P. Sethuraman in the second round of chess World Cup here on Tuesday.

However, Karthikeyan Murali, who was also tied 1-1 after his games in classical time control, lost in the tie-breaker.

The day also saw reigning champion Sergey Karjakin of Russia winning his tie-breaker against 16-year-old Anton Smirnov of Australia, the youngest participant in the tournament.

Most of the other strong contenders, including top seed and World champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway, had entered the second round on Monday.
