GM M. Shyam Sundar achieved the best result of his career when he held former world champion Vladimir Kramnik to a draw in the second round of Qatar Masters International Open chess tournament here.

Kramnik, who also drew his first round game with Stelios Halkias of Greece, met with a very unusual opening treatment from Shyam Sundar, who worked his way through some difficult moves before steering the game to a level endgame.

The Reti opening by the Russian saw Sundar opting to develop and part with both his bishops early, and although Kramnik had the better of a rather wild game, peace was signed after 41 moves.

Among the other Indians, first round heroes Ankit Rajpara and Neelotpal Das drew with higher ranked Daniel Naroditsky of the US and Milos Perunovic of Serbia, respectively.
