India in last eight after 12-year wait

India progressed to the quarterfinal stage of the FIBA Asia under-18 (junior men) basketball championship here on Wednesday.

This is the first time since 2004 that an Indian side has progressed beyond the group stage of the tournament.

India faces Lebanon in the last-eight on Friday.

On Wednesday, India had lost to Philippines 82-105 in its final league encounter.

Despite the loss, India advanced as it won two of its five matches.

China, Chinese Taipei, Philippines, Korea, Japan and Iran were the other teams which made the cut.

Philippines 105 (Jolo Mendoza 23, Kemark Carino 14, Fran Yu 12) bt India 82 (Daniel Arthur Wilson 16, Vishal Gupta 11, Sahil 11).
