IOA meeting today

October 18, 2012 01:49 am | Updated October 18, 2016 12:58 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

A Special General Meeting of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) on Thursday will take up the issue of fresh affiliations in order to meet the stipulation of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) that the voting majority in the general body be vested in those federations responsible for sports in the Olympic programme.

The IOA Acting President, V.K. Malhotra, is also scheduled to nominate the Returning Officer for the elections to be held on November 25. Notice for the elections had been issued on Oct. 5.

Meanwhile, hearing in the writ petition filed by the IOA against the National Sports Code in the Delhi High Court was put off to Nov. 9 on Tuesday. The IOA had challenged the code that incorporates the guidelines on tenure of office-bearers.

In recent interim orders related to elections in National sports federations, the High Court had ruled that elections would be held as per rules and by-laws of the federations “as well as the Sports Code” of the Government.

Malhotra is expected to contest for the post of president in the Archery Association of India (AAI) at its elections on Oct. 28, though he has held that position for more than three terms, and is over the age bar of 70 prescribed by the Government guidelines.

The Clean Sports India (CSI) Convenor, B.V.P. Rao is also expected to contest for the post of AAI president.
