Hammers keep slate clean

Haryana Hammers maintained its clean sheet in the league stage of the Pro Wrestling League, winning its fifth and final tie against Punjab Royals 5-2 to remain on top of the table with 10 points.

Punjab remained on six points and with both teams already into the semifinals, it was more about deciding the league standings.

Sandeep Tomar gave Hammers the perfect start, upsetting reigning Olympic champion and Punjab captain Vladimir Khinchegashvili 3-1 in the 57kg category.

With both wrestlers tied 1-1 with 30 seconds remaining, Tomar managed to get behind Khinchegashvili in the final few seconds to score the winner and hand the Georgian his first defeat of the competition.

Hammers captain Abdusalam Gadisov doubled it with an easy 5-0 win against Krishan Kumar in the 97kg.

Indu Chaudhary managed just one takedown through the bout, but that was enough for a 2-1 victory against Nirmala Devi in the 48kg to give Hammers a 3-0 lead.

Magomed Kurbanaliev and Marwa Amri won their respective bouts, against Pankaj Rana (70kg) and Manju Kumari (58kg) in less than stipulated time by technical superiority.

Kurbanaliev beat Rana 16-0 just one second short of end of Round One while Marwa, who had two wins by fall in her three bouts so far, finished hers with an identical scoreline in just over four minutes.

The only wins for Royals came through Russian Ilias Bekbutalov, who won 11-1 in the 65kg agianst Rajneesh, and Nigerian Odunayo Adekuoroye, who upset Olympic bronze medallist Sofia Mattsson 6-1 in the 53kg.

Hammers will take on Jaipur Ninjas in the semifinals on Tuesday, while Royals get a day's break before its semifinal against Mumbai Maharathi.
