July 07, 2016 04:14 am | Updated 04:14 am IST - Bangkok:

National record-holder Om Prakash Karhana won the men’s shot put gold at the Thailand Open athletics championship here on Wednesday but was far away from the Rio Olympic entry standard of 20.50m.

Om Prakash, whose National record throw of 20.69m came at Szombathely in Hungary in 2012, had a best throw of 18.58m today. He has a season best of 19m which came in the Indian Grand Prix in Delhi in late April. Meanwhile, National inter-State champion Dharambir Singh clocked 21.10s for the silver in the men’s 200m.

Dharambir had won the Asian Championship bronze in Wuhan last year in a personal best 20.66s and had clocked 20.90s at the inter-State meet in Hyderabad a few days ago. The Rio entry standard in the event is 20.50s.
