Chandhok confident ahead of European GP

August 20, 2009 08:38 pm | Updated 08:38 pm IST - Valencia

India’s top-rated driver, Karun Chandhok is confident of a strong show in the European GP at Valencia this weekend. With the three-week summer break coming to an end, Karrun is keen to get back behind the wheel and is looking forward to driving at the fast-paced harbourside street circuit. This will be the second year Valencia will be hosting the European GP. Chandhok is backed by Punj Lloyd, JK Tyre and Amaron.

Chandhok said, “It has been a good break but now I can’t wait to go racing again. While Valencia is a street circuit its characteristics are different to the other two street circuits, Monaco and Singapore. It is a high-speed track with long straights which is very tough on the brakes. On the other hand there is absolutely no room for error as we are driving so close to the barriers. Overtaking is very difficult on this track, so qualifying will be particularly important, which is a similar situation to the previous race in Hungary.”

Chandhok returned home during the break to recharge his batteries and work on fitness. Said Chandhok: “It’s great to have some time off to spend time with my family and friends but racing is what I do best so it’s good to be getting back to the track. I have been training very hard again in the heat of Madras and spent a lot of time swimming and cycling which has been a welcome change from training in Europe. The weather is normally very hot in Valencia at this time of the year so it should suit me. I was quite unlucky to retire on the final lap from a points position with a fuel pressure problem last year so I’m looking forward to getting some points in the bag this year.”

Acknowledging the support from the sponsors Chandhok said, “I had a chance to catch up with my partners Punj Lloyd, JK Tyre and Amaron, who have showed tremendous support to the programme.
