Sweet revenge for Brighton

September 25, 2017 09:53 pm | Updated 09:53 pm IST - Brighton

Fine finish: Tomer Hemed manages to score past Robert Elliot despite being tightly marked by Newcastle defenders.

Israeli striker Tomer Hemed’s 51st-minute goal earned Brighton and Hove Albion a 1-0 victory over last season’s Championship sparring partner Newcastle United in the Premier League on Sunday.

Hemed struck early in the second half at the Amex Stadium to give Brighton manager Chris Hughton a first victory over the club he previously managed at the seventh attempt.

It was a measure of revenge for Brighton, which was defeated at home and away by Newcastle last season as Rafael Benitez’s side beat them to the English second-tier title.

Brighton has now claimed successive home wins, having beaten West Bromwich Albion 3-1 in its previous home outing, and climbs to 13th in the table.

Newcastle slips to ninth after its three-match winning streak come to an end.

In the Bundesliga, Lucas Alario scored on his German league debut in Bayer Leverkusen’s 3-0 win at home to Hamburg on Sunday —nearly a month after the Argentina striker first signed. The 24-year-old hit the net in the 23rd minute as his side went 2-0 up after Kevin Volland had opened the scoring for the host at the BayArena with Jamaica winger Leon Bailey setting up both goals.
