German football federation (DFB) president Wolfgang Niersbach has engaged France's UEFA chief Michel Platini in some cheeky banter on the eve of Friday's World Cup quarterfinal clash between their countries.

The exchange came when DFB boss Niersbach, a member of UEFA's executive board, asked French legend Platini how Germany could beat France at Rio de Janeiro's Maracana Stadium.

"I sent him an SMS and quickly asked for a tip on how to beat the French," Niersbach said.

"He rang me back and told me that we just have to score one goal more..."

Platini twice tasted defeat against West Germany in the semi-finals of the 1982 and 1986 World Cup finals.
