October 23, 2013 05:35 pm | Updated 05:35 pm IST - London

English football will receive 102 million pounds ($165 million) of investment in grass roots funding over the next three years, the Football Association (FA) announced on Wednesday.

The effort involves the FA, the Premier League, the British government and the Football Foundation.

The money will be used to develop new or refurbished facilities, beginning in mid-January. The FA said the investment was designed to increase participation in football.

Helen Grant, the Minister for Sport, said it was an example of what could be achieved when public and private sectors work together.

“The investment of 102 million pounds into facilities, delivered by the Football Foundation, will encourage many people to get into sport in some of the most deprived areas of the country,” she said.
