Materazzi credited the Indian players for having taken their performance a notch up as compared to last year.

After having finished his two-year contract with Chennaiyin FC on a triumphant note, manager Marco Materazzi threw the window open for a possible extension next year.

“For now I want to enjoy. I wanted to win this,” said Materazzi. “Today my contract is over. If I get a chance to be here for the next ten years I will take it.

“But I will wait for one month. But for now, I will always have the club and its owners in my heart. The team is built and is now solid.”

Materazzi credited the Indian players for having taken their performance a notch up as compared to last year.

“I am very happy. Last year we changed eight Indians. But now we have a solid base. [Harmanjot] Khabra, Jeje, Lalpekhlua Jayesh Rane and Zakeer. We came all the way from Europe to develop them. Next year we need to change only a couple to get even better.”

“As we saw the crowd was against us. But I like such games. The courage of the player comes out. But I want to congratulate myself too. I not only give them skills and technique but something more.”

John Stiven Mendoza, the winner of the Golden Boot and Hero of the League awards, credited the ISL for having made him a better player.

“My being here last year helped me get into a better team [Corinthians]. I am very happy and my time here gave me the skills and motivation to get better.”
