West Indies crawl to 218-5 on third day

Hosts trail Pakistan by 158 runs

West Indies batsman Roston Chase had to retire hurt after he was struck on the elbow by an Amir delivery

West Indies reached 218-5 in its first innings after three days of the third Test, still trailing Pakistan by 158 runs on Friday. The home side had to grind all day, barely scoring at more than two runs per over. From 14 without loss overnight, the West Indies totaled 218 runs from 100 overs.

Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir had figures of 23-11-24-0. Legspinner Yasir Shah led with three wickets, all in the morning, while only one wicket fell in each of the middle and tea sessions.

That’s not counting Roston Chase, who went off retired hurt on 60 with an elbow injury in the last session.

Chase grabbed a single to reach his third Test fifty in 113 balls on the last delivery before Pakistan took the second new ball. Mohammad Abbas (1-43) got the nod and was hit for two boundaries by Chase in his first over back. But a hostile delivery from Amir struck Chase on his elbow. He received on-field treatment before retiring hurt in the 84th over with Pakistan on 183-4.

That exposed Pakistan’s innings to the new ball at just the wrong time. Three overs later, left-hander Vishaul Singh was out leg before wicket for 8 to Abbas at 189-5, and failed to overturn the decision on a wildly optimistic review.

Shane Dowrich was 20 not out and Jason Holder undefeated on 11.

Pakistan scored 376 in its first innings. Pakistan is chasing its first Test-series win in the Caribbean in a landmark match for the tourists with both Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan retiring from international cricket after this Test.

Earlier, West Indies twice lost a wicket in the last over of a session.

It was 152-4 at tea after Shai Hope (29) was out right on the break, after he was deceived by Azhar Ali into offering a simple catch to Misbah at short extra-cover.

West Indies slipped to 97-3 at lunch after Shah, who took 8 and 9 wickets in the previous two Tests, rooted out Kraigg Brathwaite. The opener was beaten by turn and gave wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed a second straight catch to be out for 29, after 123 balls, only one of them a boundary.

Kieran Powell was the first to go, teased by Shah into mishitting to Ali and out for 31 off 82 balls. New man Shimron Hetmyer (17) lasted only four overs, caught behind down the leg side after a video review.
