December 16, 2014 11:46 am | Updated 11:46 am IST - Mumbai

Following the hostage-related incident in Sydney on Monday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India has decided to send its chief of anti-corruption and security Ravi Savani to Australia to oversee the security arrangements for the Indian team. The team has been in Australia for almost a month for a four-Test series and an ODI tri-series thereafter. After the competition of the bilateral series the team will continue to stay in Australia for the ICC World Cup.

“Mr. Savani will depart for Australia tonight. The Australian High Commission has agreed to provide Visa to him. Mr. Savani will go to Brisbane where India will play the second Test and also to Sydney where India will play the fourth and final Test from January 6 to 10, 2015. Cricket Australia CEO James Sutherland has given all assurances, but we are doing this on our part to know the situation there,” Sanjay Patel, BCCI Secretary, told The Hindu on Tuesday.

As has been the practice for many years, the BCCI has engaged South African security solutions company, Nicholls-Steyn and Associates to look after the security aspects of the Indian team in Australia. Mr. Savani is expected to interact with local security agencies and also talk to the team in the light of the siege of a high-end cafe in Sydney.
