India women’s cricket coach Tushar Arothe took the “wise” step of relinquishing his post following breakdown of relations with captain Harmanpreet Kaur.
A hurt Arothe told The Hindu , “I took up the job to serve Indian cricket and gave my best as coach. It is heart-breaking when your students say you have not been a good teacher.
“My work is documented and I took this step because I didn’t want the team to suffer if I was the reason for the girls not performing well.”

Harmanpreet Kaur had reportedly complained about his training methods and inputs.
Arothe countered, “I am not the only one who picks the team. There are four others involved. All discussions are minuted. When the team does well the coach is fine. If the team doesn’t do well the coach is to be blamed.
“Is it fair? This is not a good trend.”

Arothe hung on because he got support from seniors like Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami.
“Ask them if I have not performed my job. Have I ever imposed my opinion on them. I have always tried to involve everyone. As a coach, my job is to see that there is no discrimination. I ensured that.
“To win matches, you have to work hard on the field. You can’t win matches by sitting in the comfort of the dressing room during practice sessions. It had come down to that.”
Powar interin coach
PTI reports, former India off-spinner Ramesh Powar has been appointed the interim coach of the National women’s cricket team until the BCCI finds a suitable replacement.
Powar will oversee the team camp which begins in Bengaluru on July 25. The BCCI has invited applications for the full-time coach’s job with July 20 being the deadline to apply.
“I am happy with the responsibility given and I will try my best to take them (women’s team) ahead,” Powar said.
